Q&A with Jeff

HxD asked speakers to tell us what inspires and drives them in healthcare and design.

« Previous Next »
  • Q1: What is your burning mission in health?

Giving patients all the information that they need in order to make informed decisions about their health and to be partners

  • Q2: What is something you want everyone to see?

    Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson

Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

  • Q3: Why it inspires you?

It inspires me to remember that age and infirmity cannot dampen the human spirit and its innate nature to explore and grow.

  • Q4: Why HxD?

HxD is the one conference where you can see how design can affect the patient experience - both at home, in the clinic, and everywhere in between. It allows you to get a wider and fresher perspective on the full spectrum and to make connections you might not when concentrating in your own particular area.

  • Q5: Why come to your session?

Having well informed patients improves the overall outcomes of patients and allows them to be more equal partners in making health decisions.

Website, Heal Thyself: Constructing an Integrated Patient-Focused Website

Building an Academic Health Center web presence is a unique challenge. It is the crossroads between academic institutions, research entities and clinical medical practices, combining the concerns of both a higher education institution and a medical facility. Starting from a patient-focused audience perspective, UF&Shands, the University of Florida Academic Health Center, radically transformed its web presence. In under a year, over 300 websites from six colleges, five major research institutes, five hospitals and scores of related clinics - spread geographically across Florida - have been moved into an integrated, multi-platform web environment. In our case study presentation, we’ll outline the process we used in successfully deploying a multiple CMS system (Drupal and WordPress) that builds from numerous data sources to create a unified taxonomy-driven, patient-focused portal and how that portal delivers dynamic content to the WordPress systems running concurrent to it.

"Last year's HxD conference was so amazingly inspiring, and has definitely caused me to strive harder and become more passionate about improving our healthcare system." - 2012 HxD Attendee
